Benji, along with his trusty sidekick Trudi, was one of our very first customers here at Happy Dogs Aigle and a greater character you could not meet. Small in stature but big in personality, he could always be found either sun bathing on the terrace or pottering about in the garden. Despite being a true home bird, he always trotted in happily to stay for his holidays, delighted to reconnect with his pals Perro and Siddy. Sadly Benji died on November 4th 2020 at the great age of 17. Guy & Libby, Benji's owners wanted to do something meaningful to honour his memory so we put our heads together and came up with a foster scheme we have called Benji's Buddies.
Benji's Buddies is a dedicated room in the Happy Dogs barn where we give a foster home to a dog with the ultimate goal of helping them to find their forever family. Rescue centres, whilst wonderful in so many ways, can be very stressful environments for many dogs, which makes it hard to see their true personalities. Our hope is that staying in a more family style environment, in the company of friendly dogs, will allow foster friends to relax and let their true nature shine.
Did you know that the dog that is least likely to be adopted by a new prospective family is a a) black, b) older an d c) large dog? That's precisely the reason we adopted our Gracie who, at the age of 10, had been left at the SPA in Valais just before Christmas 2017 after a vet thankfully refused her family's request to euthanize her for "being too old". Our ideal foster candidates will be dogs like Benji and Gracie, older dogs and those that could otherwise be overlooked in favour of the cute puppies and more obvious adoption choices.
We will get to know our foster friends while they stay with us, and as such be well placed to advise the type of family they would suit best. We will facilitate visits here with the blessing of the rescue organisations we work with. We will take care of our foster friends as lovingly as we do our own dogs, and those that come to stay with us on their holidays.
Funding for food and medical bills for the first foster dogs that come to stay will come from Guy & Libby in memory of Benji. We will provide free accomodation and once initial funding has been exhausted, we will continue Benji’s legacy by fundraising to cover ongoing costs. Let the journey begin!
